Current Kruger National Park Sightings

Sightings Tracker is automatically maintained by you. Upload your sightings from your smart phone (Sightings Tracker App) and anyone can view them from this page. These are the latest sightings in the Kruger National Park. Click on Interactive Map or any specific sighting to be take to the map page.

Sightings Tracker App now takes the guess work out of sightings while adding a huge database of information to your device to help you identify, learn about and track different animals. Sightings Tracker only allows sightings to be added once a GPS coordinate has been locked. Unlike other systems and social sharing sites, when sightings tracker says a sighting was 1.2km from a certain point, it definitely was 1.2km from that point, not added from a living room 400km away. The new application features one of the most sophisticated (custom designed) geocoding systems to accurately add an automatic description to your sighting, all you need to do is switch on your GPS, it will do the rest. All the sightings on this page were added from devices. Give the app a try:

We will be testing a new feature for Kruger National Park, if anyone is going there for the holidays and would like to test it out, please mail me. The new features will allow Sightings Tracker, with the click of a button, tell you your surroundings. From underlying geology, dominant grass, plant and tree species, as well as species of animals you are likely to see, based on the area, current sightings and analytics based on multiple sources. We are hopefully now able to move away from just sightings and add a new dimension to being more aware of our surrounding areas.

Sightings Tracker Version 3 has finally been released on IOS, moving forward, all future updates for IOS, Android & commercial versions will be concurrent. We have added a few new additions to the IOS version which are specific to IOS as stipulated by Apple, but the changes are more cosmetic so there should be no difference between Sightings Tracker IOS or Android.

I would like to take this quick opportunity to thank all the contributions and contributors to the software. Our next version will be out shortly which will hopefully address all the problems we experienced with integrating on IOS 8 and Android 5. Both operating systems have proven, well, troublesome. There is a list of bug fixes longer than a public Facebook argument about conservation and the team has been working extremely hard to tick off each one, test, retest, fix, and test again. A new feature we have been working on for Sightings Tracker is a commercial application which we have piloted in multiple game farms around the country, which will available for purchase by early November 2015. We have designed a game management software tool to assist rangers, field patrol units and game farm owners manage their assets, their wild life. We have designed and manufactured in-house electronics for tagging and monitoring animals, electronic counter poaching surveillance and prevention technology as well as game movement analytics, game census tools and more. We are especially excited about our counter poaching technology and equipment, which in its first 3 weeks of testing, lead to the successful arrest of no less than 12 poachers in 3 separate incidents at our test site. If you are interested in a technologically weighted approach to management and counter poaching, please email me. We will be rolling out generation 2 of our electronics shortly and have space for at least 2 more test sites.

Some Android users have reported that the application is now randomly crashing when opening / checking for new sightings. We have traced it back to our ISP, they updated the server security (without warning) which is creating the problem. We hope to have it resolved shortly (either they will revert our server settings, or we will release an update on the app store as a 'quick' fix. Thanks for the patience

For Android users, there will be an option to run the existing App (2.54) on older devices. The new version will be a completely new application (Sightings Tracker Virtual Tour guide). Unfortunately due to some features which have been added, only newer devices will be able to run the app (Android 4.3+). For Apple users, the old version will be replaced by version 3 (Sightings Tracker Virtual Tour guide). Any version will be able to sync between handsets, versions or even different operating systems.

Statistical analysis program completed. Every sighting uploaded to the server is now included in a complex analysis tool. Each sighting is compared to other sightings and grouped together to start mapping animal territories, home ranges, breeding patterns, mortalitly etc. Based on your uploaded sightings with descriptive features (total numbers, male/female, with cubs etc) we have started building a picture, which is constantly becoming more accurate with more sightings being added. There are currently over 6000 accurate sightings already stored in the database and growing at around 10-15 sightings per day on average, for Kruger National Park alone. On the map page, Select a species on the left hand column and change the "Overlay" button on the top bar, you will start to see the animal hotspots listed for that species.

25 Feb 2014

Beta Testing has started for Android devices, if you would like to assist and partake in becoming a beta tester, please email me at Sightings Tracker Application. All you need to do is send the email address you use for your android play store account and I will send the invite to download the application. There are many new features on the new version so exstensive testing will be required.

22 Feb 2014

Added a new statistical tool to the interactive map page. By clicking on a species on the left hand column, you can now change the overlay to view either the icons of specific sightings or you can view a "hotspot" overlay.
